Part of a limited series, Ullanlinnankatu #1 is a tufted textile work with hand-sculpted surface detailing. Inspired by Ullanlinnankatu in Helsinki, the piece explores an area of the city where my family lived during my earliest years. While I have no tangible memories of living there as a baby, walking through its streets and hidden passageways as an adult sparked a sense of familiarity and curiosity.
As I wandered through the neighborhood, I found myself experiencing it with the wonder of a child discovering the unknown. Courtyards, pathways, and shifting perspectives became invitations to explore, transforming the cityscape into a landscape of feeling rather than a literal place.
Guided by synesthesia, colors act as carriers of memory and emotion, shaping the work as much as the physical surroundings themselves. The vibrant palette reflects the joy, curiosity, and sense of discovery I experienced while exploring the area, while contrasts of light and shadow echo the ever-changing character of Helsinki's streets.
