Part of a limited series, The Street Remembers is a tufted textile work with hand-sculpted surface detailing. Inspired by the streets of Meilahti in Helsinki, and particularly Pihlajatie, the piece explores the relationship between place, memory, and the ways in which streets can hold traces of the lives that have passed through them.
The work reflects on the idea that a place can remember even when our own memories are incomplete or have faded. The streets of Meilahti, with their distinctive residential character, layers of architecture, greenery, and everyday movement, become a starting point for thinking about how places accumulate memories over time. A street is more than its buildings and physical structures; it carries layers of encounters, routines, departures, and returns.
In The Street Remembers, the physical character of Meilahti becomes a way of exploring these intangible traces. Rather than depicting the neighborhood literally, the work transforms its streets into something more atmospheric and internal. Through texture, color, and sculptural details, the piece considers how a place can become embedded within us — remembered through feeling, movement, color, and sensation.
Guided by synesthesia, color plays an important role in translating these impressions into textile. The layered surface and tactile qualities of the work evoke the shifting nature of memory: fragments becoming clearer and then disappearing again, with different impressions overlapping and changing over time.
The Street Remembers is ultimately a reflection on Meilahti, memory, and belonging — and on the quiet relationship we develop with the streets we inhabit, pass through, and carry with us.
