Part of a limited series, Oodi #1 is a tufted textile work with hand-sculpted surface detailing. The piece is inspired by Helsinki Central Library Oodi, one of the city's most celebrated contemporary landmarks.
Having spent decades living abroad, I returned to Helsinki with fresh eyes and a renewed curiosity about my birthplace. Among the many changes I encountered, Oodi left a particularly lasting impression. Situated opposite Kiasma, Helsinki's Museum of Contemporary Art, the building embodies a bold yet welcoming vision of public space. Its striking architecture reminded me of the cultural landmarks of Hong Kong, where I lived between 2018 and 2022, combining contemporary design with a vibrant sense of civic life.
To me, Oodi represents a meeting point between Nordic design, innovation, and community. The building's flowing forms and carefully considered functionality create a space that welcomes everyone—from avid readers and students to tourists, families, and curious passersby. It is both an architectural statement and a living, breathing gathering place.
Guided by synesthesia, I translated my experience of Oodi into color, texture, and form. Rather than depicting the building literally, the work captures the energy and atmosphere of the space: the movement of people, the interplay of light across its wooden and glass surfaces, and the sense of openness that defines the building. This piece is a humble homage to Oodi's architectural beauty and to the joyful mix of visitors from all walks of life who bring it to life each day.
