Happiness is an abstract textile work that explores the fleeting and ever-changing nature of joy. Inspired by the way emotions are experienced through color, the piece depicts happiness as a luminous current flowing through space like a river of northern lights—both tangible and constantly in motion.
Rather than representing a fixed moment, the work seeks to capture the sensation of happiness itself: elusive, fluid, and difficult to hold onto. Like waves passing through the body, the colors shift and intertwine, creating a sense of movement and energy that invites contemplation and personal interpretation.
Guided by synesthesia, color becomes a language for emotion. Vibrant hues of yellow and rhythmic wavelike forms reflect the dynamic nature of happiness, revealing it not as a destination but as an experience that ebbs, flows, and transforms over time.
The piece combines a variety of textile techniques, including cut and loop pile tufting alongside a contemporary knotting method developed within my studio practice. Together, these processes create rich tactile surfaces and sculptural elements that encourage both visual and sensory engagement, emphasizing the material presence of the work.
