Part of a limited series, Colour Lives on the Balconies is inspired by the end of the building at Pihlajatie 5A in Meilahti, Helsinki, the piece focuses on the building’s distinctive 1950s-style balconies, which face directly towards the street and become especially vivid when illuminated by the sun.
The balconies are a familiar architectural detail of the neighborhood, but in this work they become more than part of the built environment. Their rounded forms, layered structure, and relationship to the surrounding trees and street create a composition where architecture, nature, and light meet.
The work is particularly inspired by the way sunlight transforms this corner of Pihlajatie. On bright, sunny days, the balconies seem to hold and reflect the light, creating moments of warmth and intensity within the otherwise quiet residential landscape. Colour becomes an essential part of this experience, bringing out the feeling of sunshine, summer, and the lively presence of these everyday spaces.
Rather than depicting the building as a straightforward architectural study, Colour Lives on the Balconies explores the emotional qualities of the scene. The balconies become places where colour and light seem to linger — spaces that are simultaneously part of the private lives of the residents and visible to everyone passing along the street.
Guided by synesthesia, the colours translate the atmosphere of the place into a more sensory language. The rich, contrasting tones and tactile textile surface capture the energy of sunlight as I experience it, allowing an ordinary architectural detail to become something vibrant and almost dreamlike.
Colour Lives on the Balconies is a celebration of the small moments that give a familiar street its character: sunlight on a façade, colour against greenery, and the quiet beauty of a building encountered again and again.
